Duties & Responsibilities
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To manage and lecture Life Science Education to undergraduate pre-service teachers and graduates in the Faculty of Education teaching and learning programs; to participate in research as part of teaching and learning by performing own research; to supervise post graduate students in research as part of teaching and learning as well as participate in community engagement initiatives in local contexts related to the Faculty of Education initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and learning
Student throughput rate.
Completion of induction program to direct higher education teaching.
Participation in SOTL programs.
Research and furthering of own qualifications
Writing of articles and book chapters
Obtaining higher degrees.
Social responsiveness
Participation in local context in activities to promote social care.
Academic leadership and admin
Acting as a module leader in planning and implementation of curriculum in praxis.
Managing administrative tasks related to modules and Natural Science subject group.
Health and Safety
Act during practical work in laboratories according to Standard Operating Procedures of the NWU; adhere to SHE requirements in laboratories.
Desired Experience & Qualification
B Ed Hons or B Sc Hons with PGCE degree (NQF level 8) in Life Science Education/ Botany or Zoology or any related qualification.
An M Ed or M Sc with PGCE degree (NQF level 9) in Life Science Education/ Botany or Zoology.
A minimum of (three) 3 years’ experience in teaching and learning of Life Science in FET phase at schools or 2 (two) years’ experience lecturing at a higher education institution.
ADDED ADVANTAGES:
Membership/ registration with South African Council for Educators (SACE).
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
Excellent subject knowledge in Botany and Zoology.
An expert in didactical approaches and use of relevant teaching and learning methodologies in Life Science Teaching.
Ability to create and evaluate various teaching and learning activities.
BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES:
Ability to manage big numbers of students (150 or more) in the teaching of Life Science.
Ability to work independently and with a group to ensure alignment of teaching and learning across three campuses.
Ability to handle demands regarding administrative and teaching and learning activities of modules simultaneously.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
