Introduction

The University of Zululand (UNIZULU), affectionately known as Ongoye, is a Comprehensive University located on the North Coast of the Kwazulu-Natal Province. It boasts two campuses located in KwaDlangezwa and Richards Bay. It has four faculties, namely Arts, Education, Science and Agriculture, and Commerce, Administration and Law.

 

The Law Department in the Faculty of Commerce, administration, and Law, Department of Law will especially welcome applicants with experience, expertise, and suitable qualifications in the field of criminal procedure, law of evidence, and techniques in trial and litigation. The primary goals of this role are to teach, conduct research, supervise research, and get involved in community activities.

 

The successful candidate will be required to teach any other module should the need arise.

Duties & Responsibilities

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Ability to supervise and mentor postgraduate students at Masters and Doctoral levels. (Depending on the level of appointment).
  • Publications of research articles.
  • Mentoring students and colleagues within the department.
  • Ability to integrate community engagement activities with research.
  • Introduce new community engagement initiatives.

Desired Experience & Qualification

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • LLD or if not an LLD, a Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) (South Africa) and a completed professional qualification with practical experience. (Board exam and Admission into the legal profession in South Africa).
  • Between 3 to 5 years teaching and/or court experience in a higher education environment depending on qualification.
  • Experience, expertise, and suitable qualifications in the fields of Criminal Procedure or Law of Evidence or Mercantile Law and techniques in trial and litigation.
  • Ability to teach procedural Modules.
  • Capacity to supervise or co-supervise at the Master’s and Doctoral level.
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of and insights into the procedural modules.
  • Competence in communicating knowledge and facilitating teaching and learning in a lecture, seminar, tutorial, and/or practical.
  • Ability or potential to supervise research and develop research capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake administrative responsibilities at departmental or institutional levels.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in community engagement projects.
  • Competence in respect of service at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, demonstrating that the applicant is being recognised by the academic community    for producing sound scholarship in either the teaching or research categories.
  • Ability to teach well at different academic levels, commensurate with the nature of the post to which the applicant was previously appointed.
  • An interest in and engagement with the theory of teaching and learning, participation in teaching development programmes, and management of academic programmes.
  • Service to the University either at departmental or institutional level.
  • Ability to take on administrative responsibilities at departmental/faculty level.
  • Academic and/or professional participation at national and/or international levels.
  • Community engagement activity.
  • Sound interpersonal skills, including a commitment to collegiality and equal opportunity.

 

ADVANTAGES

  • A qualification in, or proof of studying towards, the assessment of learning at NQF Level 7/8.
  • Extensive court proceedings and litigation experience.
  • If no LLD, proof of studying towards a doctoral degree. (proof should be submitted with the application).
  • A proven track record of SAPSE-accredited publications in recognised local and international journals.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Skills

  • Very good Presentation Skills in English. (Talk, Write and communicate).

 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of higher education environment including SAQA, HEQC, accreditation etc.
  • Knowledge to teach either face to face or the use of electronic mediums i.e., Moodle, Whiteboard etc.

 

The University reserves the right not to make an appointment in the position as advertised or to appoint at a level lower than Senior Lecturer, depending on qualifications, Experience etc.
