Introduction

The University of Zululand currently has a vacant position in the Department of Economics. The grade and level of employment would be determined by the applicant’s knowledge, experience and accredited proof in the following areas:

  • Administrative impact,
  • Teaching and Learning,
  • Research outputs
  • Community engagement.
  • Current completed levels of supervision would also be taken into consideration

Duties & Responsibilities

The main purpose of this positions is to maintain and strengthen the Department’s commitment to teach undergraduates and postgraduates, supervise postgraduates, do research, present papers and publish papers, do community service and perform academic and administrative duties, to set an example of commitment to the discipline and its role at the University of Zululand and to represent the Department at Faculty and Senate.

GENERIC REQUIREMENTS

PROFESSOR

 

  • Competence as an Associate Professor, demonstrating that the applicant has been recognised by the academic community for producing sound scholarship in either the teaching or research categories, but preferably in both.
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge of and insights into the field.
  • Competence in communicating knowledge and facilitating teaching and learning in a lecture, seminar, tutorial and/or practical or laboratory environment; in assessment practices; the ability to engage in curriculum design and development; and a demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research.
  • Thorough understanding of fundamental research methodology and competence in facilitating research tutorials/seminars and practical sessions; and/or undertaking research projects, production of research reports and conduction of tutorials and/or practical sessions.
  • A substantial number of conference papers, peer-reviewed publications or other acceptable research outputs. A publication record, commensurate with benchmarks within the discipline or field, of research outputs, the majority of which appears in accredited and, preferably internationally recognised research journals, or creative work that has received national recognition.
  • A steady/coherent publication record, commensurate with benchmarks within the discipline or field, of research outputs, at least 4, four accredited journals and preferably internationally recognised research journals, or creative work that has received national recognition.
  • Ability to supervise research at postgraduate level to completion and to develop research capacity. Supervision of postgraduate students to completion. At least three Masters and one Doctorate graduates.
  • An involvement in the wider academic community (e.g., editorships, review requests, participation in professional bodies).
  • Capacity and willingness to undertake administrative responsibilities at departmental or institutional levels and to assume leadership positions, either in administration or in academic or professional activity.
  • Promotion of and/or active participation in community engagement projects and/or leadership in establishing such projects.
  • Sound interpersonal skills, including a commitment to collegiality and equal opportunity.

 

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

 

  • Competence as a Senior Lecturer or Senior Researcher, demonstrating that the applicant has been recognised by the academic community for producing sound scholarship in either the teaching or research categories.
  • Ability to teach well at different academic levels, commensurate with the nature of the post to which the applicant was previously appointed. Advanced theoretical knowledge of and insights into the field.

 

Either:

    • Competence in communicating knowledge and facilitating teaching and learning in a lecture, seminar, tutorial and/or practical or laboratory environment; in assessment practices; the ability to engage in curriculum design and development; and a demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research.

OR

    • A thorough understanding of fundamental research methodology and competence in facilitating research tutorials/seminars and practical sessions; and/or undertaking research projects, production of research reports and conduction of tutorials and/or practical sessions.
  • A steady/coherent publication record, commensurate with benchmarks within the discipline or field, of research outputs, at least 4, four accredited journals and preferably internationally recognised research journals, or creative work that has received national recognition.
  • Peer-recognition as a specialist in the field and a potential to make a substantial contribution to the discipline or field by way of peer-reviewed publications/ book contributions.
  • Ability to supervise research at postgraduate level and to develop research capacity. Supervision of postgraduate students to completion. At least three Masters and one Doctorate graduates.
  • Involvement in the wider academic community (e.g. editorships, review requests, participation in professional bodies).
  • Ability and willingness to undertake administrative responsibilities at departmental or institutional levels and to assume leadership positions, either in administration or in academic or professional activity.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in community engagement projects.
  • Sound interpersonal skills, including a commitment to collegiality and equal opportunity.

SENIOR LECTURER

  • Ongoing research activity and dissemination of research findings, including a substantial publication record in terms of this policy.
  • Institutional administrative service as well as community service.
  • Competence in respect of service at the level of teaching and learning demonstrating that the applicant is being recognised by the academic community for producing sound scholarship in either the teaching or research categories.
  • A record of extensive publications, at least two of which must be in SAPSE recognised journals.
  • Mastery of the subject matter in one's area of specialization.
  • Ability to and/or a record of supervision/coaching Master’s Students.
  • Supervise at least 5 Honours student or 2 Master’s or 1 PhD to completion.
  • Good human relations and ability and willingness to assume some administration and leadership roles.
  • Sound theoretical knowledge of the field.

 

Either:

    • Competence in communicating knowledge and facilitating teaching and learning in a lecture, seminar, tutorial and/or practical or laboratory environment; in assessment practices; potential to engage in curriculum design and development; and a demonstrated ability to undertake research;

or

    • A thorough understanding of fundamental research methodology and competence in facilitating research tutorials/seminars and practical sessions; and/or undertaking research projects, production of research reports and conduction of tutorials and/or practical sessions.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in community engagement projects.

Desired Experience & Qualification

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Economics
  • Must have at least 5+ years (depending on level) teaching experience in a higher education environment.
  • Sound to advanced (depending on the level), theoretical knowledge of the field.
  • Supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students and teaching of undergraduate courses and at the honours level.
  • Publication of research articles in accredited journals.
  • Supervision of students work and co-publication with students.
  • Participation in community engagement projects.
  • Presentation at conferences, both local and internationally.
  • Must be able to use at least 3 types of econometrics software, i.e., STATA, R/RStudio, MATLAB, E-Views, etc.
  • Ability to teach any two of the following subjects at the postgraduate level:
    • Macroeconomics
    • Mathematical Economics
    • Microeconomics
    • Econometrics
  • Ability to teach any one of the following:
    • Development Econometrics
    • International Economics
    • Finance/Financial Economics
    • Health Economics
  • Registration with a Professional organisation such as ESSA or ERSA would be an advantage.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Skills

  • Teaching skills at University level, especially teaching large classes.
  • An ability to design curricula.
  • Capability to stimulate and teach research and participation in departmental academic discussions.
