Why Finding the Right Talent Is Still a Challenge for Schools - Episode 3
In Episode 1, we explored the challenge of attracting the right talent.
In Episode 2, we looked at what happens when the right talent never sees the vacancy in the first place: reaching the right talent.
But what happens when the right people do apply?
The applications are relevant. The qualifications look good. The experience is there.
Yet another question remains: Who is actually the right fit for the school?
That is where the next challenge begins.
Let’s get started with the third one.

Episode 3: Identifying The Right Talent
A candidate can have the right qualifications, years of experience, and an impressive CV, and still not be the right person for a particular school.
Why?
Because qualifications and experience only tell part of the story. They tell you what a candidate has achieved, but not necessarily how well that person will meet the specific needs of your school or contribute to its environment.
This is where a school's understanding of quality matters.
Research by Andersson highlights how schools' needs and their ideas about what constitutes quality can influence their hiring decisions.
In other words, schools should not simply assess candidates based on their CVs. They should also be assessing whether a candidate represents what successful teaching and education look like in their particular environment.
The challenge is making that assessment deliberately, rather than relying on instinct alone.
The Solution: Define What “Right” Means for Your School
Identifying the right talent starts with knowing what “right” actually means for your school.
Every role has different requirements, and every school has different needs. Having a clear understanding of the skills, experience, qualities, and contributions that matter for a particular role gives your school a stronger basis for identifying the right candidate.
Your school cannot afford to get this hiring decision wrong, because a poor hiring decision will not only affect your learners, but also the wider team, the school culture, and the time and resources the school has already invested in the recruitment process.
So, before reviewing applications, ask:
- What will success in this role look like?
- Which skills or competencies are essential?
- What experience really matters for this particular role?
- What qualities will help this person thrive within our school environment?
- What does the school need this person to contribute to its learners and wider community?
Answering these questions will help your school establish a clearer picture of what the right talent looks like.
Then, as you screen candidates, assess them against what your school genuinely needs, rather than relying solely on qualifications, years of experience, or an impressive CV.
This helps move your school beyond simply asking, “Is this candidate qualified?” to also asking, “Can this candidate succeed in our school?”
Because your goal should not simply be to find someone who can do the job, but to identify someone who can succeed in the role and contribute meaningfully to your school.
